You've probably heard her on radio singing her smash
hit "Come to Jesus." You probably love her rendition of Dolly Parton's
classic "Jolene."
But her performance Saturday in Minneapolis was
something you've never heard before: Mindy singing before a sold-out crowd.
Inside, the place was packed. Before the doors
opened, the line was around the block. And once everyone was in, there was
standing room only. Tight, smoky, way too warm. To make things
worse, there was not one but two opening acts.
But it was worth the wait. Mindy was amazing.
Mindy has that sort of raw talent that sets her apart
from the over-polished Britneys and lip-sinking lolitas that executives program
into our minds through too much airtime and too little variety.
Mindy's is a talent that shows she's not just putting in her time working little
clubs like Fine Line Music Cafe until she makes it big. You can tell she
truly has a passion for her music and her fans.
Maybe it was her unpretentious winter boots and scarf.
Maybe it was her soulful style of singing. Maybe it was how she opened up
herself to us and shared how her childhood has shaped her. But whatever it
was, there is no doubt: she sold out the show, but she'll never sell out
herself.
Mindy Smith is exactly what music needs. She's
real, and she's good.
On stage, after thanking us for helping to make this
her first sold-out show, she asked a question. "If I come back, will you
come back to see me?"
Yes, Mindy, we will. But next time, how about a
bigger venue?
