Ruam Mit Thai Cafe
*** out of 4 stars
By Matt Dahl
In downtown St. Paul, Ruam Mit is a great place to pick up some takeout on your way home. If you're not picky about decor, stay there and enjoy your meal. Beware: this is not upscale dining. But what it lacks in charm it makes up entirely in taste. If you've never tried Thai before, get the Pad Thai, which is stir-fried rice noodles topped with egg, green onions, lemon, bean sprouts, and roasted peanuts. It's tasty and it's comfort food and it's as good here as anywhere. You also won't want to miss out on the fresh, delicious Spring Rolls, filled with carrots, cellophane noodles, cilantro, shrimp, and stir-fried pork. Served with a golden peanut sauce, you'll wonder why you ate fried egg rolls all those years. The real gem here is their version of Laab Nua/Kai, which for more practical purposes can be ordered simply as #46. Choose ground beef or chicken, and it is served in a luke warm salad of fresh lime, roasted rice powder, cilantro and green onion. I have not tasted this dish done better anywhere else. The Ruam Mit Thai Cafe is wheelchair accessible and does accept Visa; however, other aspects are not quite so modern and efficient. On the two occasions that I've been there so far, the men's toilet was out of order and the bathroom in general was unclean. 475 St. Peter Street St. Paul, MN 651-290-0067 Open Monday through Saturday
